An erupted fire hydrant helped residents stay cool in Palm Springs in 1972.

Local youngsters were able to enjoy a brief, unexpected cool off from the summer heat after a fire hydrant erupted following a car accident on July 4, 1972 in palm Springs.

When a car hit a fire hydrant at the corner of North Palm Canyon and Vista Chino, water erupted and spilled out onto the intersection directly in front of Germain Brothers Liquor Store and Sambo’s Restaurant.
