Avoid caricature: These mod pieces offer a wink to the best of ’60s and ’70s style without overdoing the kitsch factor
No doily needed
In the ultimate juxtaposition of softness and strength, Moooi’s Crochet Table marries cotton fibers with epoxy resin to create the ideal accessory for any mod interior. Created by a Netherlands-based design collective, the table beefs up the innocent daisy by adding a hard edge of modernity. The result: a fabric cube that’s deceptively solid and ultimately eye-catching. Designed by Marcel Wanders, the table is available as both a 12” cube and a 24” bench. Cube, $1,606; bench, $2,516. Order through Interior Illusions, 830 N. Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs. 760-325-0300.
Branching out
Dressed in fabrics that stand as an updated reminder of late 1960s flower power, the organic forms and pithy metalwork of Stonegate’s Roots lighting, available exclusively at Thom Home, are the epitome of a mod-inspired bright idea. Pricing available upon request. Thom Home, 41945 Boardwalk Ave., Palm Desert. 760-328-2036.
Retro cool
There was a time in our history when some of us (no need to name names) took to the great outdoors donned in little but neon paint and good intentions. Forty years later, Italian design giant Smeg has created a line of retro-meets-neon fridges. Their bold hues and reminiscent designs seem to say that although our free-spirited youth may be the stuff of memories, our taste for fun lives on in the here-and-now. 1950s-style refrigerator with ice compartment, orange or lime green, $1,999. www.smegusa.com.
Shape-shifters
Famous for his 1968 design of the low-slung, all-foam Adria chair that exemplified the funky lines and casual aesthetic of the era, Michel Ducaroy in 1973 developed the now-iconic Togo chair and sofa, made of 100 percent foam and covered in durable polyester. Unlike the beanbags that followed, this luxurious lounger melds beautifully into almost any interior and remains one of Ligne Roset’s most enduring items. It is now available in mini-sizes for the stroller and toddler set. Chair $1,335 to $3,360 and sofa $2,480 to $5,850, based on material. Ligne Roset, 69930 Hwy. 111, Rancho Mirage. 760-328-9900.
Made in the shade
Shed light on your inner ingénue with über-round Harlot sunglass frames by Oliver Peoples. Their superb curves stand as an homage to Twiggy, Sophia, and all the glam gals in between. Available with diamonds and (sigh) without. $340; with diamond detailing, $6,000. Tonalita Optics, Westfield Palm Desert, 72840 Hwy. 111, Palm Desert. 760-766-2279.
Rocky 106
If rocks could dream, they would dream of the sinuous sweep and arresting arc of Colossal Man Sculpture #106. Rapturously smooth, the gently balancing shapes remind us of the roles that both experimentation and representationalism played in the evolution of design. $5,295. Peter Taylor Interior Design, The Atrium, 72098 Hwy. 111, Rancho Mirage. 760-341-6721.
The girl next door
Oh, how we love a local girl. Palm Springs tastemaker Trina Turk wins us over every time with her swirls and soft geometry reminiscent of the bright ideas and amorphous beauty of our favorite decades. The Salina Dress in Turk’s enduring Marisol print makes us forget time and trends and focus solely on style and structure. $248. Trina Turk Boutique, 891 N. Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs. 760-416-2856.
Here comes the sun
It’s no wonder that design giant Jonathan Adler has been obsessed with the ultra groovy wall sculptures of C. Jeré for years. Jeré’s gorgeous metal sunbursts, explosions of raindrops, and mirrors suspended by exquisitely crafted brass petals are the stuff of mod dreams. Now, in an exclusive partnership, Adler and the C. Jeré studio have reissued Jeré’s most iconic midcentury designs, promising to add just the right je ne sais quoi to any wall. Sunburst sculpture, signed and dated, $1,100. www.jonathanadler.com.
