This 6.8-mile, round-trip trek gains 1,100 feet in elevation and rewards adventurers with stunning vistas. Hitch a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, pick up a free (but required) wilderness permit, and head out on the Round Valley Loop trail. At about 2.5 miles, follow the sign to the divide. As you ascend 600 feet on this mile-long stretch, Toro Peak and the Palomar Mountains come into view. At the divide, enjoy the sights from 9,700 feet, with the Palomar Observatory to the west. Bring hiking poles, a few liters of water, and an extra layer of clothing.
